Description:
Abstract:
The raster land use/land cover data is a digital product of a supervised classification derived from multi-date 1982 Landsat 3 Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) satellite imagery. Field data for crops were obtained from the the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Urban areas were identified using 1:100,000 scale Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) with a source date of 1985. Other information were gathered using 1993 Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles (DOQQ's). Irrigation information was obtained from the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Public Power Districts, and Natural Resource Districts. Center pivots were on-screen digitized using multi-date Landsat 3 MSS data. The cell size for the data is 187 feet and there are 21 different land use/land cover classes. The overall accuracy of the land cover classification was calculated at 74.07%.
Purpose:
This land use/land cover data provides information necessary to supplement the hydrologic modeling in the study area. The land use/land cover data can be used as a digital layer in various studies. It is useful as a background layer in a GIS, and can also be merged with other digital data (ie DEM's or DOQ's) to produce a hybrid digital file.

Process Step:
Process Description:
Multi-date Landsat 3 Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) satellite imagery were used to generate this land use classification for 1982. Cloud coverage dictated date selection to the greatest extent, although imagery was chosen to represent spring, summer, and fall growing conditions. Before the supervised classification was run, clouded and urban areas were removed from the imagery. Urban areas were defined using 1985 Digital Raster Graphics. Clouded areas were classified in a second stage, using an unsupervised classification with the remaining unclouded dates. Field data for crops were obtained from crop data provided by Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Spectral signatures for cropland were collected by identifying homogeneous field areas identified using the NRCS data. 1993 Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles were used to locate signature areas for riparian and forested areas. Multiple spectral signatures for each class were extracted and evaluated for continuity. Unrepresentative signatures were deleted. The remaining signatures were then used in a supervised classification on the multi-date imagery. After the classification algorithm was run, classes were evaluated for accuracy. A 'cluster busting' technique was applied to compensate for mixed classes. Irrigation information was obtained from the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, NRCS, Public Power Districts, and Nebraska Natural Resource Districts. Center pivots were on-screen digitized using the 1982 Landsat 3 MSS satellite imagery. Once the land cover classification was complete, a 3X3 majority filter was applied to agricultural classes to minimize the remaining mixed pixels. Major roads identified in the 1997 COHYST land cover classification were overlaid onto the final 1982 classification. Due to the larger cell size for MSS imagery, roads were not as easily identified. The cell size for the data is 187 feet and there are 21 different land use/land cover classes. The overall accuracy of the land cover classification was calculated at 74.07%.
